The Mystery of Samba: Popular Music & National Identity in Brazil by Hermano Vianna,

The Mystery of Samba: Popular Music & National Identity in Brazil by Hermano Vianna,
Samba is Brazil's "national rhythm, " the foremost symbol of its culture brazil music and nationhood. To the outsider, samba brazil music and the famous pre-Lenten carnival of which it is the centerpiece seem to showcase the country's African heritage. Within Brazil, however, samba symbolizes the racial brazil music and cultural mixture that, since the 1930s, most Brazilians have come to believe defines their unique national identity. But how did Brazil become "the Kingdom of Samba" only a few decades after abolishing slavery in 1888? Typically, samba is represented as having changed spontaneously, mysteriously, from a "repressed" music of the marginal brazil music and impoverished to a national symbol cherished by all Brazilians. Here, however, Hermano Vianna shows that the nationalization of samba actually rested on a long history of relations between different social groups -- poor brazil music and rich, weak brazil music and powerful -- often working at cross-purposes to one another. A fascinating exploration of the "invention of tradition, " ###The Mystery of Samba# is an excellent introduction to Brazil's ongoing conversation on race, popular culture, brazil music and national identity.

Axé music - Axé music is a style of popular music which originated in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. The word comes from a ritual greeting that means good vibration and is used in the Candomblé and Umbanda religions.

Music of Venezuela - Venezuelan pop music has been largely overshadowed on the international scene by its neighbors, especially Brazil, Trinidad and Colombia. It is known for its own salsa, merengue and other imported styles, as well as the distinct llanera music.

Lusophone music - Portugal and its former colonies are linked musically by the shared influence of fado, a bluesy form of music derived from itinerants in Lisbon. In varying forms, the genre has dominated Portuguese music since the early 20th century, and has also spread to its former colonies, especially Brazil and the African colonies (Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde and Angola), while having a lesser influence on the Asian colonies of Sri Lanka and East Timor.
